dis and data . William C. Blizzard writes that AMERICANA
magazi ne in New York has advised that they have accepted his
article and pictures on scrip which will feature NSCA. You may
recall that he took a host of pictures at Fairmont meeting. Will
keep you posted. He thanks all who helped with the project.....
The Lorena Furnace token is hot in the Civil War Token Society.
This W.Va. token was certainly related to coal and the current
issue of their bulletin features a nice article on salt wells and related coal in the
Charleston, W.Va. area.... The token is priced in the $700 to $800 range and several
have been coming to light recently ... .Visit ors at the Colonel's office recently included:
Lee Nott of Illinois, Elvin Miller of Virginia and Paul Mace of Ohio - all NSCA
members ... .Scr ipt or Frank Elam of Illinois presented a token talk on coal scrip at the
Oak Park Coin Club meeting recently. He is attempting to recruit new members for us.
....Greenbrier County W.Va. has a silver 200th anniversary medal available from:
Coin Committee, Drawer 457, Ronceverte, W.Va. 24970 at $45. and $20 . Don't
miss the Corbin Fall 1978 meeting of NSCA - See details in this issue of plans !!
FALL MEETING- AT CORBIN, KBwTUCKY
Finalize your plans and make your reservations now to attend
the 11th Seini Annual Fall Meeting of M3CA.
Where Corbin, Kentucky
When Saturday, October 7, 1978
Place Holiday Inn - Exit 30 - Interstate 73 at US 25W
Program Scrip Show, Trading, and Selling 8:30 am
Business Meeting Approximately 1:00 pm
Several innovative firsts have been planned by co-host Tip
Tippy and Bill Williams, starting with a group BUTCH dinner Friday
evening and continuing into the program for the business meeting.
Reservations should be made directly with the Holiday Inn
by mail, telephone or through your local Holiday Inn. Be sure to
to specify that you will be attending the NSCA meeting* A block of
20 rooms, which have been set aside for members, will be held until
6:00 pm, Friday, October 6. Tnis part of Appalachia is very popular
this time of the year, and the Holiday Inn usually fillsup fast; so
you are urged to make your reservations promptly.
East Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky have quite a few new
members, many of whom will be attending a Scrip Show for the first
time. A good turnout is expected from our old friends in West
Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Ohio as well as
Kentucky and Tennessee. We also hope to see representation from
Alabama, Georgia, Illinois and other nearby states in view of the
easily accessible location of Corbin on a major North-South Inter¬
state highway just 30 miles north of the Tennessee-Kentucky border.
C0-hostes3 Eleanor Tippy and Bonna Williams have arranged
for a Ladies Hospitality Room, where the ladies can meet, socialize,
play cards and plan local sight seeing trips. So, bring the wife.
She will enjoy the vacation and learn what really goes on at a
Scrip Show.
If at all possible, you are urged to arrive at Corbin before
6 pm Friday. The group BUTCH dinner is tentatively planned for 7 pm,
with a program which you will be sorry if you miss.
We particularly hope to see Bon Edkins come down from Fram¬
ingham, Mass. We missed him at tne Fairmont meeting in May and
would look forward to buying more of his personal collection. A
special invitation is extended to those members who live west of
the Mississippi River. We hope some of you will make plans to
attend. Remember, we are not coal scrip collectors only. Some of
us also are very avid lumber scrip collectors.
One filial note. 4ltnough Kentucky is renown for its excell¬
ent bourbon manufacturing, Corbin is BRY and so is the Holiday Inn.
Some of us will have a brown bag to open in emergencies, but those
who like this type Of liquid refreshment are advised to BYOB.
Y'all Come. *»e'll be there Thursday to welcome early
arrivals and to get the trading started.
THE TI1FY3 AN1) THE WILLIAMS
NOTES ON THE HOUSTON TAMS MEETING
Your NSCA Secretary would like to thank all NSCA members who are also members
of TAMS for your votes that helped me to be elected again to the TAMS Board of
Governors. If I can be of help to you as a Board member, please let me know...
Houston was very hot L ! Being used to staying in an air-conditioned office, the heat
was about to get to me.... Only 42% of the 1701 present members of TAMS voted
in the election.... Arlie Slabaugh (an old friend and member of NSCA) was
elected as TAMS President for a two-year term replacing Cliff Mishler of Krause
Publications.... TAMS dues are going up to $8.00 per year on January 1, 1979.
This would be a good time for interested NSCA members to join and an application
blank is being reprinted below for your use.... The TAMS Journal costs more than
the annual dues to publish - the 1977-78 deficit was $3858.32 ... Thus, members
get a good bargain and the Journal features free ads for all members along with very
interesting articles on tokens and metals... Coal and lumber token items often are
featured... Why not mail the application below in today ?? The Don Edkins'
catalog on coal tokens received the bronze "Mishler Exonomunia Catalog Award"
medal at the TAMS banquet. Bob Craigo accepted on behalf of NSCA and will
have the award to show at the Corbin meeting in October before forwarding on
to Don.... (Golly, how do you spell that exonum... word?).... In event you have
not already seen it in the numismatic press, Paul Cunningham, Rich Hartzog, Ben
Odesser, and Dave Schenkman (NSCA members) were among the ten elected to the
TAMS Board of Governors.... Other NSCA members I met in Houston included
Agnar Walberg, W. E. Fowler, R. W. Colbert and Russell Paul. All indicated
that they want to make some of the NSCA meetings.... A copy of the Edkins
book was presented as a door prize at the TAMS banquet and a copy was presented
to Cliff Mishler of Numismatic News (hope the NSCA board goes along on my
action or I'm stuck for these copies. Hi!).... The Julian book on mint medals
was a very expensive project for TAMS and took top award of course. The book
cost $79,831 . to produce and only $7502. in sales has been recorded to this date.
NSCA members should feel very good about their book being paid for and money
coming in now is profit to help on publication of a second edition or a supplement.
The Kappen California token book cost TAMS $7747. to publish and receipts to
this point have been $4630 . Something to think about !! TAMS assets show
a balance of $71,417. with 2700 shares of Franklin Mint stock included in the
portfol io. . .

What is it? A complicated mathematical formula? Ho. A slogan?
Yes. A difficult task? Yes. Achievable? Yes, buu the help of every
member will be needed. Well! 'What is it? This is our way of 3aying
that tne Membership Goal is to double the number of NJCA members by
the May 5t 1979 Meeting.
During tne past eleven years tne national Scrip Collectors
Association nas grown from a small group oi avid collectors located
mostly in the Southeastern States to an organization with 334 members
in May 1978 in 43 states, including one member in ToKoyo, Japan
and another member in the new to be state of D. C. Since May we
have added 19 members.
In order for scrip collecting to continue its growth and
establish itself as a major collector's area, it is extremely im¬
portant that more memoers be found as soon as possiole.
Hew members not only provide additional funds for tne develop¬
ment of future programs of interest to all members, they also pro-
the means to increase tne demand for the available supply of scrip
tokens as they build their personal collections. In addition they
will bring mofe scrip tokens on the market as they search for and
locate new sources.
Recognizing that an increased membership is necessary to the
future of N30A, a campaign to double the number of members was an¬
nounced at the May, 1978 meeting.
In this campaign, every member of NSC/v is being asked to
signup at least one new member by May, 1979*
For most members this should not be too difficult. All of
us know one or more people who should belong to N3CA. NOW is the
time to ask that person to join.
Some of the methods which can be used to obtain a new member
are :
1. Use the excellent membership brochure wnioh waiter Caldwell
prepared. It gives a good description of NJCA, its our* oses
ana objectives. If you don.' t have copies, Walter will be
send you some upon request.
2. Ask a friend.
3» Get a relative interested in collecting.
4» Ask a person wno currently may be a coin collector.
5* Get a coin dealer to join. Trading in dcrip should be money
in his pocicets.
6. Ask a person who regularly sells at Flea i arxets in your area.
7- Ask. a person in your age range.
8. Ask a younger or an older person.
9» Give a Gift Membership to a friend or relative.
10. Use the Bdkins Catalogue of Coal Company Store 3orip as a
selling tool. This book describes and classifies more than
10,000 pieces of known scrip and establishes a rarity value
tor ea~h piece. I t is the Book which every scrip collector,
doth old ad new, should have. Copies can be obtained from
Walter Caldwell or John Fliss.
11. Use Dotirill s book 20,000 Coal Company Qtores as a selling
tool. 1 iii s book lists all companies known to have been in
the coal mining business wnen tokens were beiwg used. It
is an invaluable reference booK for every token collector,
and often will enable a collector to identify a token as
coal scrip even though it may not yet be recorded in the
BdKins Catalogue. Gordon still has a nimber of copies,
contact nim at 441 omitnfield St. Pittsburg, Pa. , 15222.
These are only a few suggestions
you feel would be helpful in obtaining

B U COAL TOKENS ??
+ H t l t +-H+4 llll-H H-l I I I l-f
In the last Issue of "Scrip Talk" I noted that a new collector had returned some
coal tokens because of their condition stating that he did not collect "culls" and
that he was through with ccal scrip. I indicated in the bulletin that comments
from coal and lumber token collectors would be welcome and would be published
in "Scrip Talk" .
One Alabama collector wrote, "I was at one time a coin collector, then stepped
up to Civil War Tokens, and finally to collecting in its purest form - coal scrip.
Many regard coin grading as a science - but lets face it - it's opinionated ! !
I 'm sure that many hours of work went into the new ANA grading guide, but it
still has a long way to go. Please, let's keep our hobby an exciting treasure hunt
without constant complaining of grading scales! 1 would truly suggest that if you
en{oy the "science" of coin grading, don't collect coal scrip. Go look for those
MS6 7\ silver dollars advertised in "Coin World" each week."
A Tennessee collector noted, "Tokens can be graded, maybe not In a standard form
such as MS or Brown and Dunn, but nicks, dents, digs, off color, wear, etc. can
and should be mentioned - scratches too. I realize how rare some tokens are in
any grade - but that grade should be described to the prospective bidder. When
you adopt some type of system, I shall return to bidding."
A Maryland collector added, "I must say, Walter, that although I can appreciate
your point, I must take the side of the gentleman who returned the lots. While
I don't think it necessary to grade tokens and scrip like coins, I feel it is important
to describe any defects such as scratches, holes, corrosion, etc. Also, badly worn
specimens should be so noted. I have many strictly uncirculated examples of very
rare issued; by the same token (pardon the pun), I have other fairly common types
that I have been unable to locate in better than average condition. You make an
example of the Milby & Dow Coal & Mining token, and I think it proves my
point. Here we have a very rare token, but in bad condition. The fact of the
matter is, that same token in better condition than the one you own is worth more
money than the one you have. The same goes for any tokens. Put two examples
of the same token side by side - one in nice undamaged condition and the other
with defects. The undamaged one will sell first every time, in most cases even
if priced higher than the damaged one. (No argument with me here. My point
was that I would much better like to have a token in any condition than not
have the company or piece represented in my collection! A better piece might
never become available - but, if so, the damaged one would be replaced by a
better one. Editor's comment.)
Perhaps the following comments by Jim Hal! as printed in "An Introduction to
Exonumia" by Rich Hartzog of Illinois best suits my thoughts on token condition.
Although the article pertains to Civil War tokens, the same would apply to coal
and lumber tokens so read his comments in that light .
"How many times have you gotten the following type of query: ' I collect
CW tokens in uncirculated condition only; what do you have for sale or trade?'
Having been in the hobby prior to 1970, I'm not certain that such a concept is
(Continued on following page)
BU COAL TOKENS (From preceding page)
practical. One must remember two major concepts of CW tokens: you get them
when and where you can find them and quality control never was the main factor
behind the striking of such tokens. Tokens were struck to meet the short term needs
of a merchant as a medium of small change. The idea was to put together as
advertisement of simplicity whose duration of service was for a short period of time
among a usually small and local clientele. My concept of token collecting has
often been a question of am I willing to pay the price for a piece rather than
what is it's condition? If a piece I need turns up, condition would be the last
of three questions that I would be concerned with. The first question I would
consider is how scarce is the piece? Secondly, what is the selling price or bid
range on the piece? If someone offered me a Blain, an Ibert or a Seth Smith,
I wouldn't be too critical of the condition. To the uninformed public, condition
is impressive. To an informed collector, the scarcity of a piece is the predom¬
inant factor in acquiring a token unless one has the opportunity to come in contact
with more than one specimen of the same die variety on more than one occasion."
To sum it up, I agree that MAJOR defects of a token should be noted in the bid
sales and I am now attempting to note the MAJOR defects on all pieces - see
the current mail bid listings for examples. I know that an undamaged piece is
better than a damaged token and l always try to upgrade my collection if a
better piece comes along! However, I would not let defects prevent my acquiring
a token to enable me to add a new company to my collection or to complete
a set of a particular company. A better piece might never be available, but,
I would have the company represented in my collection. Incidentally, I have
never seen a later offering of the Milby & Dow Coal & Mining token in any
condition and I am happy with my old holed, scratched, dented piece. All this
comment has been offered to the newer members of NSCA so that they can enjoy
their new hobby without major concern about the condition of the tokens. Many
of the coal and lumber items were buried in the ground for years - many were
carried in the pockets of miners for years being exchanged at the company store
every few days - and some, of course, never left the company store safe. So,
expect to find them in many, varied conditions.
